Keepass retirement post

It's been 13 years, but I'm finally moving on from Keepass and switching to KeepassXC.

Thank you for all your years of service.

It was long overdue, especially after I deliberately downgraded to an older Keepass version that didn't have a "feature" that couldn't be turned off and devs clearly didn't see why anyone would want to.

I actually did switch to KeepassXC for all of 5 minutes when this happened, and reverted right back to the old Keepass version. KeepassXC insists on having a minimum horizontal window size that can't be resized any smaller. People are very annoyed with this, including me. My general Keepass window is about half the enforced width, and I hate it.

The other less personal issue with Keepass is that it doesn't natively support Linux, so I've always installed mono and used it through Wine. The annoying thing about Wine Keepass is its inability to remember window settings on program restart. And now I've switched with bad default window positioning and sizing for a sizing that can't be changed.

I still have to hand it to Keepass though, despite my issue with the autocomplete, it is still much better than KeepassXC on the browser integration end. The Kee plugin that I use on Firefox works on practically every site I use with minimal fuss. KeepassXC's integration is finicky and 8 of 10 "static" log in forms didn't work with it. Turns out it is way less flexible with what entries get included in the login extension than Kee. I'll have to slowly add in URL entries for more sites the more I see breakage. This is one huge minus against KeepassXC.

Thanks for being with me all these years, Keepass. Your .kdbx will still live on.

If you're looking into password managers, Bitwarden is probably the way to go unless you want fully offline functionality. It's extremely easy to set up and batteries are included, so if you're the kind of person who wants minimal fuss to set up software, it's probably for you. Otherwise, give KeepassXC a go.
